The history of this island is fascinating with evidence of human settlement from Mesolithic times, through Neolithic, Bronze-age and Iron-age. Relatively safe from marauders the island provided a peaceful existence for generations. But Skye has seen many times of turbulence too – clan feuds, Jacobite collusion and the sadness of the Highland Clearances. The traditional croft culture has sculpted the landscape you see today and remains an important way of life on Skye even in the 20th century. There are 10 castles on Skye! Most are ruins now, but Dunvegan Castle & Armadale Castle are good places to visit.
